Adventures in Korea Series: Intro

I recently came back from a 2-week trip to Korea, spending time mostly in Seoul and Jeju-do. I can’t even begin to put into words how utterly life-changing my experience was…..but I shall try!  Continue reading “Adventures in Korea Series: Intro”

Katventures: Bay Area Pun-Off

It’s seriously an amazing feeling to be surrounded by a warm community where you feel like you have a safe space to speak your mind. That’s what I found when I attended my first ever pun-off.  Continue reading “Katventures: Bay Area Pun-Off”

We’re just trying to find some color in this black and white world

She said, “Take your time, Things will be just fine. Don’t bite the hand that feeds,
‘Cause nothing is ever mine. And just wait your turn,
And always try to learn To love the ones that don’t show love in return.”
We’re just trying to find some color in this Black and white world.

Lately, I’ve been having a huge resurgence in my pop punk music phase from those tweenage angst days. What I love about this genre of music is that the songs usually emit a plethora of emotions–happy, sad, melancholic, optimistic, you name it. This song, “Color” from The Maine’s 2010 album, Black & White, speaks so much to me because it truly preaches a sanguine approach to life and whatever may come. John O’Callaghan sings about how all people feel like life may be unfair to them at some point in their lives or how all people feel like others don’t show perfect kindness to them. Because everyone feels in this way or has felt this way, it can affect how they treat others and how open we are with each other. And thus, society ends up in a chain reaction cycle of people treating each other indifferently because they feel like they’re being treated indifferently. Hailey Williams from Paramore sings in “Playing God”, “You don’t deserve a point of view if the only thing you see is you”. We must look at the bigger picture and think not just of ourselves but of other people and their feelings as well. As John Oh said, “we’re all just trying to find some color in this world”, so let’s take that crucial step forward and bring that color back into people’s lives so our world doesn’t have to be so black and white. Whether it be giving a friendly smile to that person you almost ran into on the street to reaching out to that one person you somehow lost touch with. Just go out there and let someone know that they’re cared about. And most of all, be happy!

Love,
Katrina
